Technical Accuracy- Sentence Structures

Elevate your writing by using varied sentence structures! This skill won’t develop overnight. Make sure to read a lot AND practise a lot more.

Read this post to understand why it is important to have varied sentences. Included in this post are different types of sentence structures followed by examples (you’ll find them in bold for each example).

Remember, practice makes perfect 🙂

Why is this skill important?

Firstly, it helps to keep the reader engaged and interested in the text. Constantly using the same structure can make the writing feel repetitive and monotonous. By mixing up the types of sentences used, you can create a more dynamic and engaging piece of writing.

Secondly, varying structures can help to convey information more clearly and effectively.

Finally, using a variety of sentence structures can help to improve the overall flow and rhythm of your writing.

Different sentence types:

  1. Simple sentence: a sentence containing one independent clause.

3. Complex sentence: a sentence containing one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.

4. Compound-complex sentence: a sentence containing at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.

5. Interrogative sentence: a sentence that asks a question.

6. Imperative sentence: a sentence that gives a command or makes a request.

7. Exclamatory sentence:

Developing the skills:

To improve your writing skills, it is important to build your confidence. One effective technique for achieving this is to practice copywork. Copying model sentences can help you improve your writing skills, expand your vocabulary, and hone your awareness of punctuation and grammar. Additionally, copywork can help you develop new ideas for your own writing. Even famous writers like Benjamin Franklin used this technique to enhance their skills. Therefore, we suggest you read this post carefully and consider implementing this technique in your own writing practice.
